European Barbies
European Barbie

The 1970s European Barbies look just like the original Malibu Barbie — minus the tan. :)

European Barbie #8587 was produced from 1971–1976. The earliest dolls wore Malibu Barbie’s light blue swimsuit, while dolls from 1975–1976 came in a yellow maillot. Unlike America’s Malibu Barbie, who was only available as a blonde, the European version was also produced as a Titian redhead. She features the Stacey head mold, a Twist ’n Turn waist and bendable legs. The redhead reminds me of Yellowstone Kelley!

European Barbie #7382 was produced from 1976–1978. During her first two years, she wore a turquoise bikini, before switching to a bright pink one-piece swimsuit in 1978. Like #8587, these dolls still resembled the original Malibu Barbie — just without the suntan. You can read more about #7382 in another blog post of mine.

My red-headed European Barbie #8587 (pictured above) is wearing 1975’s “A Busy Girl’s Ready-Set-Go Clothes” #7242. This colorful fashion included a striped tricot halter top, matching scarf, and knee socks paired with a woven yellow skirt and jacket accented with red stitching. The skirt featured a yoke waist, while the jacket had vertical pocket flaps and a banded hem. Red woven knickers and chunky yellow shoes completed the cheerful, sporty look.

These European Barbies are a bit more challenging to find. See if you can find yours here on eBay!!
