Barbie's Dream House and Other Structures
Barbie’s first home, built in 1961, was the “Barbie Dream House."
Barbie has lived in some pretty groovy homes over the years. And honestly, who wouldn’t want a Dream House?
What’s especially fascinating is that Barbie bought her first home in 1961 — long before women in the U.S. could legally apply for a mortgage without a husband or male co-signer in 1974. While the real world was still catching up, Barbie was already an independent homeowner living her best mod life. Tut tut to that nonsense, indeed!
Barbie later shared homes with besties P.J., Casey, and Stacey, plus relatives Skipper and Francie. But Ken? Nope. No Dream House for him. Barbie was clearly the money-maker in that relationship. :)
The '60s homes were more traditional but by the early '70s, the homes started leaning into brighter color-blocking and more family living layouts. Here are some of her more popular homes over the vintage and Mod years.
The 1962 “Barbie Dream House” #0816 is the most common of all the Barbie cardboard structures. It unfolded into one big room that included a bedroom and living room. Barbie started the “open concept” home!
Furnishings included cardboard items such as a twin bed, coffee table, TV, matching chair and ottoman, sofa, a vanity chair with a mirror, table lamp, books, a framed photo of her boyfriend Ken and pillows. Barbie had records to play on her record player and she had quite the collection - Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Kingston Trio and The Preps!

There were two reproductions of Barbie's Dream House;
2017 Reproduction: This release marked the first time Barbie Signature created a vintage replica of the original mid-century modern cardboard structure. It also celebrated the 75th anniversary of Mattel.
2020 Reproduction: This set is highly sought after as it included not just the cardboard house and furniture, but also a reproduction vintage doll and three classic 1960s outfits.

Shazam! Barbie's new Dream House was quite the upgrade from 1962. It was divided into four living spaces: living room, kitchen, bedroom and patio. It came with a sofa, two chairs, an end table, a coffee table, a TV, two lamps, a vanity chair, a bed, two kitchen chairs, a kitchen table and a cool lounge for the patio.

Compared to Barbie's Dream House, this home was smaller AND Barbie had to share it with Skipper!

Both of these rooms were mid-Century cool and full of fun things to do. Skipper's Dream Room even came with a mini "Barbie Dream House" for her to play with!

1966 Deluxe Family House #3305
This was an exclusive Sears holiday catalog release. It opened up into a fully furnished, two-room apartment. The interior includes a plastic lavender sofa with matching chairs and ottoman, a kitchen table and chairs, closet, bed and vanity with a mirror.
The bedroom was against the back wall and the remaining space was divided into a sitting area and breakfast nook. A divider doubled as a fireplace on the living room side and a kitchen on the breakfast side.

During the many years of production, the World of Barbie House had various colors of vinyl, dye lots, accessories and graphics.

This home has three vividly decorated, contemporary styled rooms. The vinyl on this house is often cracked. Funny how over the years the 1960s cardboard Barbie houses endured better than the plastic ones in the 70s!

1970 - 1972 Barbie Lively Livin' House
This was the Barbie house I had as a kid and I loved it! It's a two-story, three room structure with a kitchen, bedroom and sitting room. This was also issued as Barbie's Surprise House and it came with a gardening set, cooking set and tricot bedspread.
It was likely named Lively Livin' House because, at that time, Livin' Barbie and Skipper were introduced.
My favorite, although not a home, is the 1963 Barbie's Fashion Shop #0817. It includes a fun fashion stage where Barbie and her friends can try on and twirl around in new outfits. The next Barbie structure debuted in 1964, Barbie Goes To College #4093. Outside panels include scenes of a football stadium and game and a drive-in movie theater. The interior view is a campus dorm room and a sweet shop; a place to meet friends for an ice cream float!
Over the years, many more digs were built for Barbie, her family and friends. These structures included the 1966 Francie House #3302, 1966 - 1967 Barbie Family Deluxe Home, various World of Barbie Houses from 1966 - 1972, 1966 Francie and Casey Studio House #1026, and 1967 - 1968 Barbie and Francie Dressing Room Case #1024. There was a housing boom in 1970 because Barbie got a cute restaurant called Barbie Cafe Today #4983, Barbie Lively Livin’ Room, Barbie Teen Dream Bedroom #4985, and the Barbie Cookin’ Fun Kitchen #48987.
Barbie had fun trying on new looks in her 1971 Unique Boutique Wig and Fashion Shop, and jetting off to Vail in 1972 to her Sears Exclusive Barbie Mountain Ski Cabin #4283. From 1968 - 1976, there are many variations of the Barbie and Stacey Sleep ’N Keep Case. A Jamie Studio Apartment #4996 and a Jamie Party Penthouse #4990 came out in 1970.

You know, the cardboard structures have held up much better than the vinyl versions in that those tend to crack. Hard to find one in perfect condition.

Vintage Barbie doll cases are typically not worth anything significant. The best thing to do is search for the item on eBay, watch it, and see what it sells for.
